"Metabolic Madness" - Kettlebell Smackdown
Published: Wed, 05/24/23
For the past 10 weeks, my training life has revolved around preparing for a powerlifting meet, and three main lifts - the squat, bench press, and deadlift.
I've continued to incorporate my trusty kettlebells into the routine, and a weekly yoga session to maintain balance and flexibility... but the lion's share of my energy has been on this upcoming event.
And it's paid off: I feel stronger than I have in years!
On the downside, I'm probably spending double the time I was with a lot of my home-based KB workouts - I have to drive to the gym, get ready, lift for 60-90 minutes, and drive home - several times per week.
And here's the ironic twist: from an overall fitness perspective, I feel as though I've regressed.
I've noticed a tightness creeping into my muscles, a rigidity replacing the agility I once had.
I felt a painful reminder of this the other day, when I darn near pulled a hamstring playing catch with my daughter!! :)
You see, the vast majority of my clients are NOT prepping for a powerlifting meet. They want to build strength and lean muscle, but not at the expense of their mobility and athleticism. They want to stay agile, to enjoy a spontaneous game of basketball, to jog with their dog in the park, to play with their kids without worrying about injuries.
If your goal is to excel in powerlifting or any specific sport, specialization makes sense. Intense focus and dedicated training are the way to go!
But if what you're after is all-around fitness - the kind of fitness that allows you to live life fully and energetically - then I cannot recommend kettlebells enough. They allow you to gain strength and lean muscle, while staying athletic, mobile, and
in amazing physical condition, all the at the same time.
Not to mention, they are quick and efficient, and can be done any time, any place in short 20-30 minute workouts!
My friend Funk Roberts has put together an amazing High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Bundle on sale this week that you should check out. It includes numerous kettlebell workout plans, all designed for metabolic training that supports your comprehensive fitness goals.
