Old School Strongman – Isometrics Workout
Published: Fri, 12/06/19

Have you ever checked out the feats of strength that old-school strong men would perform?
Charles atlas, for example, was one of the most popular musclemen of his day.
A few of the physical feet he could perform were:
— tear a telephone book in half
— pull an automobile with his neck
— lift one end of a car off the ground
So how did he develop this level of strength? What kind of training methods did they use?
I think the answer may surprise you.
They are not techniques that mainstream fitness expert to use today for building strength.
Charles Atlas developed a system of exercise he called “Dynamic Tension”, where you would use the force that your own muscles generate to cause fatigue.
This is a type of isometric exercise. This is a method where you force the muscle to activate but you don’t actually move the joint.
Now Charles Atlas had a best-selling course on isometrics that he sold starting in the 1920s. You might even be familiar with a comic book ad – it was brilliant marketing. It turned him into a multi-millionaire in the time of the Great Depression.
A skinny guy is at the beach with his girl and a bully comes along. The bully kicks sand in in his face and the girl takes off with him. Frustrated and angry, the skinny guy resolves to become a strong man and orders the Atlas course. In the next 12 weeks, he transforms himself into a he-man. Then he returns to the location of humiliation, beats up the bully, and gets the girl back.
The course itself is dated, but effective. He’s got a great overall philosophy. It also includes training on things like the right and wrong boxing positions, 20 famous wrestling holds etc. I believe the PDF is $45 on his website, and it is 91 pages long.
Again, it’s a great course. But another one that you might check out if you want a little bit more updated version of a similar program is is called Isometrics Fit. It’s got training manuals, plus video training, plus a complete meal plan, and a lot more. And it’s just 9 bucks (at the time of this writing) at the link below:
